Travel Meets Our team provides educational options on a regular basis for our athletes in the form of team travel. Team building is just the tip of the proverbial ice burg. Team travel accelerates an athlete's competitive development through challenges and lessons. Travel meets are special as they provide opportunities that traveling alone can not produce. Outside of the fact team travel is a whole lot of fun young athletes must take responsibility for making good choices and develop understanding on what it takes to get along with team mates. Coaches have the opportunity to learn a great deal about the athlete and how they react to different stresses which will affect performance during competition. Competition is a time to swim fast and is the reason for travel. Opportunities to practice good decision making is abundant; nutritious food selection, adequate rest and appropriate behavior must be in the athletes mind at all times. "What is going to help me swim fast" should be the controlling factor realizing that the team is traveling to swim fast vs. going on vacation. Learning to respect teammates while protecting one's own goals is paramount when building a strong team. Some athletes are simply not going to be serious about swimming fast. Opportunity is always present to develop leadership skills as the team must remain focused on the task of swimming fast. Each athlete is responsible for performance and must learn to protect their goals as well as the goals of the team. Athletes are at times faced with a block of free time and must learn how to constructively utilize their time in a manner that will enhance the overall effort of swimming fast. There are more opportunities to be distracted so focusing and good decision making techniques may be developed. Developing the thought process "Expect the unexpected" is a tremendous advantage for the competitive athlete. While all meets present challenges team travel presents more than usual. How are you going to deal with challenges? Are you going to take command of your challenge or allow the challenge to destroy your opportunity to swim fast? So pack your bag, strive forward with your team and enjoy the journey. |
